Airport Operations Specialists I/II perform a wide variety of duties related to the operation and maintenance of airport facilities/equipment and compliance with general aviation and safety regulations. Specific responsibilities include: providing emergency crash, fire and rescue services; monitoring airport activities, aircraft and fueling operations to ensure compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and local regulations; providing information to airport users regarding air traffic procedures, noise abatement procedures and weather conditions; making regular inspections of facilities and equipment and performing necessary repairs and maintenance; and receiving and processing request and complaints from airport users and the community.

The ideal candidate will have the skill and ability to:
  • Climb ladders
  • Lift up to 50 pounds
  • Operate machinery such as commercial mowers, and other grounds maintenance equipment
  • Provide first responder services to include: First Aid, limited ARFF response
  • Ability to pass the Respirator Exam
In addition the ideal candidate will have experience in maintenance, aviation operations, plus strong customer service skills to deal effectively with requests, inquiries and complaints from airport users and the general public. As well as a mechanical aptitude, ability to work and coordinate projects, ability to effectively work as a team or individually. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and experience with airport maintenance and operations, and a demonstrated ability to make sound judgments and good decisions under pressure and in emergency situations. Experience in using various computer applications and the aptitude to learn new technology is highly essential. 

The successful candidate will work at both the San Carlos and Half Moon Bay airports and will work weekend, holiday and evening shifts.

License: Possession of a valid class C California driver license or equivalent.

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. See position description above for more information.

Knowledge of: Accepted emergency practices, procedures and regulations including First Aid, CPR and aircraft fire fighting and rescue techniques; airport safety and operations procedures, including air traffic control and crash, fire, and rescue procedures; ground keeping repair and maintenance; record keeping principles and methods; operations and maintenance of airport vehicles, equipment, facilities and grounds; and Federal Aviation Administration regulations.

Skill/Ability to: Work courteously and effectively with the public and with co-workers; perform a wide variety of mechanical and maintenance tasks; use hand, electric and pneumatic power tools; respond appropriately in emergency situations; perform support tasks including keeping accurate records, making arithmetic calculations, handling cash, and filing; follow oral and written instructions including safety rules, procedures and practices; apply safety rules, procedures, and practices and respond appropriately to emergency situations; work independently with little supervision; write accurate and detailed reports and using a microcomputer; and perform activities such as handling fire hoses, climbing 60 foot ladders, and lifting airport related equipment.

San Mateo County employees who have worked at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in classified regular, probationary, SEIU or AFSCME represented extra-help classified position prior to the final filing date will have 5 points added to their final passing score on this examination. The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: pass/fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions.  All applicants who pass the review will be invited to the examination process which consists of a performance exam (weight: 100%). All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
