The Department of Public Works is seeking highly motivated individuals with great technical and interpersonal skills to join our dynamic team!

The Automotive Service Workers are assigned to the Vehicle and Equipment Services Section of the Department of Public Works. The Vehicle and Equipment Services Section maintains, inspects, services and repairs County motor vehicles including school and other buses, trucks, equipment, Sheriff's vehicles and motor pool vehicles. Service and repair stations are located in Redwood City and San Mateo.

An Automotive Service Worker I/II performs a variety of semi-skilled automotive maintenance tasks which include the full range of lubrication and minor repair services, as well as performing routine service related duties such as pumping gas, changing oil, etc.

What we look for in an Ideal Candidate:

  • Possess at least one year of verifiable professional work experience in Automotive Services; and experience with hybrid and basic computer diagnostic. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified is preferred

Note: Automotive Service Workers can be required to be available to work at various locations throughout San Mateo County. The candidate appointed into the position must possess own tool set to perform position responsibilities.  Must have a Class C California driver license or equivalent and a Class B California driver license is required within six months from date of hire.


 Qualifications:

Licensure/Certification:  Possession of a Class C California driver license or equivalent is required. The successful candidate is required to obtain a Class B California driver license within six months from date of hire.

Education and Experience:  Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is one year of experience performing automotive service work.

Knowledge of:  Methods, tools, materials and equipment used in servicing motor vehicles; common automotive equipment cleaning methods; common automotive parts and supplies; and proper condition of various auto parts, and procedures for ensuring proper condition and operation.

Skill/Ability to:  Perform general service work on vehicles; use common automotive service tools and equipment including air wrenches, lifting jacks, brake bleeder, cooling system testers, and volt-ohm meters; use chassis lubrication equipment; change tires; check proper condition of tires, belts, hoses, wiper blades and batteries; follow oral and written instructions; follow safety rules and procedures; perform simple arithmetic; work courteously and effectively with the public and co-workers; direct the work of others; stand and walk for extended periods of time; and lift and carry equipment and supplies used in the course of work.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Automotive Services Worker I is the trainee level class in the automotive service series responsible for dispatching, servicing and fueling County owned vehicles and equipment and for receiving, training in and performing lubrication and minor repair tasks. Incumbents are expected to advance to the Automotive Service Worker II level after gaining experience and demonstrating the required proficiency.

Automotive Services Worker II is the journey level class in this series, responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled automotive maintenance tasks which include the full range of lubrication and minor repair services, as well as performing routine service related duties such as pumping gas and changing oil. 

 Application/Examination:
Open and Promotional. Anyone may apply. Current San Mateo County and San Mateo County Superior Court employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, SEIU or AFSCME represented extra-help/term position prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.

Candidates must pass the written test in order to move forward to the performance test performance test (weight: 70%).  Depending on the number of applicants, a screening committee may select those applicants whose education and/or experience appear to best meet the needs of the position based solely on the information provided in the application documents. Because of this screening process, all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the next phase of the examination process. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and all applicants must participate at their own expense.
