The County of San Mateo Health System's Division of Public Health, Policy and Planning is seeking a well-qualified individual for the position of Certified Medical Assistant - Mobile Health Clinic/Street Medicine - Spanish Speaking Required - Extra Help.

The Street Medicine team is stationed at 225 - 37th Avenue, San Mateo, CA 94403, but the Certified Medical Assistant will work in the field with the Nurse Practitioner to provide medical services to homeless and farmworker clients. The schedule for this position is 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; and 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. 

We are seeking a Certified Medical Assistant who is energetic, flexible, a team player, and focused on patient safety and satisfaction.

Certified Medical Assistant duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Driving the Street Medicine van
  • Working in the field (outside of the office) to provide medical services
  • Coordinating patient follow up appointments
  • Taking vital signs
  • Assisting Physician/Nurse Practitioner with procedures
  • Administering immunizations and other medication as approved by Physician
  • Documenting information into electronic medical record
  • Patient education
  • Assisting Nurse Practitioner and service providers with various other duties
  • Ordering supplies
  • Loading and unloading medical supplies and medications

NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

  • California class C driver license or equivalent
  • Possession of a Medical Assistant Certificate or a certificate of completion or degree from an accredited medical assisting program
  • A current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate issued by the American Heart Association or a valid Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Red Cross.
Language Requirements Ability to speak, read and write fluently in both English and Spanish.

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is one year of experience in an outpatient clinic or doctor's office as a nurse's assistant or medical assistant.

Knowledge of:  Principles, techniques and procedures specific to area of assignment; principles and techniques in delivering patient care services related to personal hygiene, comfort, treatment, transportation, rehabilitation and physical or psychosocial needs; infection control; diagnostic imaging; safe lifting techniques; theory and practice of total body substance isolation; patients' rights; and elder and child abuse, and domestic violence reporting requirements.

Skill/Ability to:  Follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively orally and in writing; perform a variety of tasks and activities; develop and maintain empathetic attitudes toward patients; provide assistance in delivering patient care in the field; observe and record patient conditions and vital signs; lift and transport patients and heavy items such as supplies and equipment; work with patients with multiple diagnoses; and work with a culturally, socio-economically diverse patient population of varying ages.
