We are seeking an experienced full-time Charge Nurse for our 39th Avenue OB/GYN Clinic, located at San Mateo Medical Center. The Charge Nurse will be responsible for directing patient care, daily scheduling, clinical and quality improvement activities, and providing guidance to the clinic. This position oversees the clinical staff, including assigning, coaching, evaluating, and making sure the clinic is in compliance with all state and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) regulations. The Charge Nurse will manage and lead a team of Licensed Vocational Nurses, Registered Nurses, and Medical Services Assistants in the OB/GYN Clinic. You will mentor, coach, and develop staff, ensuring positive and effective relationships are built and maintained with patients, physicians, and all staff.

San Mateo Medical Center is a public hospital and clinic system fully accredited by The Joint Commission. The Medical Center operates outpatient clinics throughout San Mateo County and an acute-care hospital in San Mateo. The Ideal Candidate will have:
  • Two years of OB/GYN outpatient nursing experience.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Experience in providing education and updates to staff.
  • Experience scheduling multiple shifts.
  • Experience working with underserved populations.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Experience with electronic medical records.
  • Experience with registries.
  • Experience overseeing day-to-day clinic operations.
  • Bilingual Spanish language skills.
  • Current BLS certification.

 Examples Of Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provide support and education to the clinical support staff in the clinic by collaborating and sharing skills regarding patient care in a non-judgmental and non-critical manner.
  • Assist in identifying education and orientation opportunities for clinical staff.
  • Intervene, as necessary, on issues relating to patient complaints, health care providers' concerns, and operational issues, and take measures to correct situation or ensure appropriate personnel are involved.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement initiatives: LEAP (Learn, Engage, Aspire, and Perfect) which is based on the LEAN principles founded by the Toyota Management System. Our organization is committed to the LEAP principles and quality improvement. This includes validating staff on standard work and participating in LEAP/Kaizen events.
  • Understand the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies and procedures which may include some familiarity of other departments within the facility; is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department.
  • Exercise judgment and assume responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area, on a regular and continuous basis.
  • Participate in Stats, Huddles and Daily Management System.
  • Attend regular meetings and relay pertinent information to staff.
  • Assess and evaluate staff in a timely manner, as well as assigning annual competencies required by position and Joint Commission standards.
  • Exchange non-routine information using tact and persuasion as appropriate requiring good oral and written communication skills.
  • Train and orient new staff as well as review the checklist of competencies with the employee based on job classification.
  • Conduct regular, bi-weekly 1 on 1 meetings with each staff person, providing pertinent feedback about job performance, coaching and goal setting.
  • Lead effective monthly staff meetings.
  • Engage staff and adapt in a continuously changing environment. 
  • Work with the Supervising Physician of the OB/GYN group and Nurse Practitioners within the clinic. 
  • Approve weekly time cards of direct reports in a timely manner. 
  • Collaborate with other clinics within the Ambulatory Care Clinic system. 
  • Create a monthly schedule within a timely manner and daily schedules to assign staff with providers and room assignments. 
  • Perform other duties as identified per the SMMC Charge Nurse job description.
  • Report to the Clinics Manager.
  • Provide culturally competent care to patients.
  • Possess Bilingual skills (preferred, but not required).
  • Follow Joint Commission, HEDIS, HPSM, State of California Department of Public Health, San Mateo Medical Center, CMS standards and any other governing bodies for which the clinic is mandated to follow specific guidelines/standards. 
  • Document interactions with patients in appropriate systems and has working knowledge of all systems utilized in the clinics.
  • Assess, evaluate and direct nursing activities on an assigned shift to provide quality care to patients in compliance with prescribed standards and in conjunction with nursing management.
  • Supervise and perform nursing assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation of patient care on the unit.
  • Work in conjunction with nursing management to coordinate adequate unit staffing for the assigned shift.
  • Participate with unit or clinic nursing management in interviewing, hiring, completing evaluations and performing disciplinary counseling of staff.
  • Supervise the work of professional and paraprofessional nursing staff.
  • Work with nursing management to identify staff development needs and to implement continuing education programs.
  • Assist nursing management in planning unit or clinic budget.
  • Interpret policies and procedures to nursing staff.
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Coordinate with ancillary support departments to coordinate total patient care.
  • Maintain and evaluate records.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Knowledge of: Nurse Practice Act and professional and governmental standards or regulations pertaining to nursing; nursing theories, principles, methods and practices; safety and infection control principles; clinical systems, supplies and equipment; principles of staff development; and supervisory principles.

Skill/Ability to: Perform and evaluate the performance of nursing procedures required for the assigned shift and clinical setting; plan, organize, supervise and evaluate the work of nursing staff; comprehend, interpret, and implement nursing policies and procedures; instruct and train professional and paraprofessional employees; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; maintain professional nurse-patient and nurse-physician relationships; and prepare reports and maintain accurate records.

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

Licensure/Certification: Possession of a California license as a Registered Nurse.
