The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division is seeking temporary, full-time extra-help Election Worker Office Assistants to assist in the upcoming November 2017 election. This is an excellent nonpartisan opportunity to get involved in the election process!

The dedicated and hard-working individuals selected for the positions of Office Assistant will be hired into one of four areas:
  • Clerical Support
  • Customer Service
  • Outreach Services
  • Voting Equipment

The Clerical Support Office Assistants will be responsible for clerical support at various times leading up to established election deadlines. Examples of duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Data entry
  • Assembly of election supplies
  • Assembly and processing of Vote by Mail ballot packets
  • Counting ballots
  • Operation of voting equipment
A few, but not all, of the clerical support positions require the ability to lift and carry materials and supplies weighing more than 50 pounds.

The Customer Service Office Assistants will be responsible for assisting the public in person and over the telephone at various times leading up to established election deadlines. Examples of duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Customer service in person to assist voters to register to vote or cast a ballot
  • Customer service on the phone to assist voters with registering to vote, finding election material, understanding their voting opportunities and casting a ballot
Several, but not all, of the customer service positions require fluency in Spanish, Cantonese or Mandarin.

The Outreach Services Office Assistants will assist at community events, and with preparing materials and contacting individuals. Examples of this include:
  • Demonstrating voting equipment
  • Registering voters
  • Presenting information about the upcoming election
  • Assisting voters to cast a ballot
Several, but not all, of the outreach services positions require fluency in Spanish, Cantonese or Mandarin.
 
The Voting Equipment Office Assistants will assist with the voting equipment used at polling places. Examples of this include:
  • Helping function test voting equipment
  • Assist in delivery and pickup of voting equipment at polling places
A few, but not all, of the voting equipment support positions require the ability to lift and carry materials and supplies weighing more than 50 pounds.

The hourly wage for the Election Worker - Office Assistant position is $17.84.
 Qualifications:

A minimum of one year of general clerical, office assistant, phone services or computer experience is desired for the Clerical Support or Customer Service positions. Office hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. These positions may require weekend and evening work assignments.

Ideally, the selected individuals will be available for ongoing seasonal elections work.

Successful candidates for the Clerical Support positions will have knowledge of general office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment. The ideal candidate has strong attention to detail and logical organization. Successful candidates will have the ability to enter data at a minimum rate of 40 wpm with 100% accuracy.

Successful candidates for the Customer Service positions will have knowledge of general office practices and procedures, including the operation of standard office equipment. The ideal candidate has the ability to provide excellent customer service to people with a wide variety of questions and concerns, has superior listening and communication skills, and possesses basic computer and data entry skills. There are customer service positions in the phone bank with no face-to-face contact with the public, and there are positions for in-person customer service.

Successful candidates for the Outreach Services positions will have experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, communities and abilities.  The ideal candidate is comfortable speaking in front of small groups. In addition, the ideal candidate is bilingual in one or more of the following languages: Spanish, Mandarin and/or Cantonese, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, or Japanese.

Successful candidates for the Voting Equipment positions will have experience working in a warehouse.  The ideal candidate has strong attention to detail and logical organization.

Critical Skills for all Election Worker – Office Assistant positions include the ability to prioritize work, coordinate several activities, organize and maintain accurate files and records, and understand and carry out oral and written directions.
