The San Mateo County Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Information Technology (IT) Technician. Under general supervision, the IT Technician will provide technical information and assistance to users and personnel. The Information Technology Technician will be responsible for application, desktop, and user support.

Application support duties include management of the operation, maintenance and upgrading of applications used by the department such as virus/spyware protection software, imaging software, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, case management software, and other department-specific applications. Desktop support duties include installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance for desktops, laptops, scanners, and printers. Duties also include the provision of user support by assisting with audio and video editing, training, and user group management. 

The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Two years of increasing responsible experience providing computer desktop support
  • Possess a working knowledge of Microsoft operating systems to include Windows 7/8 and Windows Server 2008 and 2012
  • Knowledge of audio and video editing software tools
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Share-Point, Microsoft Office 2010 and Office 365 suite
  • Knowledge of Active Directory concepts and administration
  • The ability to provide support of office equipment such as network printers, scanners, and projectors
  • The ability to provide excellent customer service
  • The ability to work independently and strong teamwork skills
  • The ability to manage changing priorities under time constraints while paying attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing
  • Microsoft or other IT related certifications and server experience is a plus

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot and upgrade department computers, printers, scanners, faxes, disk drives, keyboards and related equipment.
  • Assist users in solving operational hardware and software application problems; evaluate problem severity and resolve or escalate to appropriate personnel or vendor.
  • Assist with the production and editing of multi-media including recordings, media conversion, editing, backup and storage of analog and digital data presentation and videos; setup webcast and video conference meetings.
  • Provide and support department's audio-video equipment including laptops, televisions, and projectors; set up and provide technical support for meetings and courtroom presentations.
  • Provide Access database and case management system support.
  • Create and manage users in Active Directory (AD) domain.
  • Provide e-mail support including creating and maintaining distribution lists and troubleshooting email connectivity.
  • Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Coordinate with external vendors to get equipment serviced.
  • Maintain inventory of addresses, laptops, workstations, servers and peripheral equipment; prepare decommissioned workstations for surplus pickup and/or storage; order equipment and supplies as required.
  • Participate in departmental systems planning activities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
  • Education: Possession of a high school diploma and technical certification from an accredited college in a specified area with coursework in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field.
  • Experience: One year of full time experience performing information systems equipment installation, system support, and/or user support duties.
  • Physical Requirements: An applicant must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, walk, sit and reach by extending hands and arms in any direction on a consistent and daily basis; communicate verbally by listening and talking on a consistent and daily basis; use finger dexterity to pick, pinch, type, and grasp objects with fingers and palms; perceive attributes of objects by touch on a consistent and daily basis; and occasionally use upper extremities to exert force to push and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more; and lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis. Note: Applicants who do not meet the physical requirements due to disability will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Knowledge of:
  • Computer networks and systems, their operation, support, development and migration.
  • Computer hardware and software products used by the department and industry.
  • Methods and techniques used in troubleshooting computer hardware problems.
  • Operational characteristics of various hardware platforms, peripheral equipment and desktop applications including electronic mail systems, spreadsheets, word processing database, presentation graphics, client server applications, communication protocols and intranet/internet.
  • Recordkeeping and filing principles and practices.
  • Job planning and prioritizing techniques.

Skill/Ability to:
  • Install and support hardware and software used by the department.
  • Analyze operational and systems problems, evaluate alternatives and reach sound conclusions.
  • Provide technical support to multiple users of broad based applications.
  • Respond effectively to user problems and needs.
  • Use initiative and sound independent judgment within established procedural guidelines to support automation systems.
  • Prepare clear, concise and accurate documentation, instructions, correspondence and other written materials.
  • Develop and present comprehensive training material for the appropriate area.
  • Maintain accurate records and files.
  • Organize work, set priorities and meet critical deadlines.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Analyze user requirements and recommend appropriate data automation products.

Departmental Promotional Only. Only current San Mateo County employees in the San Mateo County Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, SEIU or AFSCME represented extra-help or term position prior to the final filing date may apply.

The examination process will consist of an application screening (pass/fail).  Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualificationAll applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
