The Public Works Department is looking for a highly-motivated Information Technology (IT) Technician.  Under general supervision, the IT Technician will be responsible for supporting the IT staff with general desktop support and access control systems support.  General duties include imaging PC's, installing software and hardware, documenting procedures, keeping accurate records, providing advice to users of application software, and training users to make appropriate and safe usage of the IT infrastructure.  The IT technician will also be responsible for providing superior customer service in working with both internal users and other departments in maintaining records in the card key management software.

The Department of Public Works is unique by being one of the few departments in San Mateo County to have its own internal, full-service IT unit, Business Systems Section.  BSS is a small group of dedicated IT staff who are responsible for a wide-range of roles in Information Technology: from handling core IT functions to providing GIS support to handling access control. 

Working in BSS, staff have the opportunity to learn and work with many different aspects of technology including: desktop support, enterprise application support, design/ implement/ maintain server and network infrastructure, creating GIS maps and spatial applications, internet/ intranet web design and support, databases, and even some programming opportunities.

The ideal candidate:
  • Has the experience and knowledge of access control/cardkey systems. (Desired, but not required, must be capable to learn)
  • Is able to maintain confidentiality with sensitive customer and internal information
  • Has thorough knowledge of computer software and hardware and a variety of internet applications, networks and operating systems
  • Has great troubleshooting skills
  • Is creative, patient and has strong attention to detail
  • Has the ability and interest to quickly master new computer applications
  • Is a problem solver with strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to effectively communicate with diverse groups
  • Can understand and consistently follow policies and procedures and be able to work effectively without close supervision
  • Has the ability to work well and independently in a multi-disciplinary, fast paced environment

This is a full-time position with the primary work location at 555 County Center, 5th floor, Redwood City, CA. 

Expected position hours:  7:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.  Time subject to change based on organizational need. Occasional on-call duties may be required.

Some of the Duties and Experience You'll Gain:
  • Be part of a customer-service driven team to research, analyze, and implement technology solutions in cost-effective ways that meets users' needs
  • Resolve user problems by clarifying users' complaints, determining the cause of the problem, selecting and explaining the best solution, and following up to ensure resolution
  • Participate in departmental systems strategic activities to constantly improve business processes and incorporate appropriate new technologies
  • Using card key management software to add, delete, modify and maintain user access for the card key systems to ensure compliance with trust rules and procedures
  • Using card key management software, analyze terminal and controller problems; analyze, troubleshoot and resolve or work collaboratively in a team-setting to tackle more complex issues
  • Troubleshoot and respond to emergency equipment failures promptly and find solutions
  • Providing outstanding customer service to departmental users and be an ambassador for Public Works to other departments
  • Perform related duties as assigned, in addition to typical duties outlined in the full job description

 Qualifications:

What You Bring to this Position: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
  • Education: Possession of a high school diploma and technical certification from an accredited college in a specified area with coursework in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field.
  • Experience: One year of full time experience performing information systems equipment installation, system support, and/or user support duties.
  • Physical Requirements: An applicant must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, walk, sit and reach by extending hands and arms in any direction on a consistent and daily basis; communicate verbally by listening and talking on a consistent and daily basis; use finger dexterity to pick, pinch, type, and grasp objects with fingers and palms; perceive attributes of objects by touch on a consistent and daily basis; and occasionally use upper extremities to exert force to push and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more; and lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis. Note: Applicants who do not meet the physical requirements due to disability will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Knowledge of:
  • Computer networks and systems, their operation, support, development and migration
  • Computer hardware and software products used by the department and industry
  • Methods and techniques used in troubleshooting computer hardware problems
  • Operational characteristics of various hardware platforms, peripheral equipment and desktop applications including electronic mail systems, spreadsheets, word processing database, client server applications, communication protocols and intranet/internet
Skill/Ability to:
  • Install and support hardware and software used by the department
  • Analyze operational and systems problems, evaluate alternatives and reach sound conclusions
  • Provide technical support to multiple users of broad based applications
  • Respond effectively to user problems and needs
  • Use initiative and sound independent judgment within established procedural guidelines to support automation systems
  • Prepare clear, concise and accurate documentation, instructions correspondence and other written materials
  • Develop and present comprehensive training material for the appropriate area
  • Maintain accurate records and files
  • Organize work, set priorities and meet critical deadlines
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with both technical and non-technical personnel
  • Analyze user requirements and recommend appropriate data automation products

Open & Promotional. Anyone may apply. Current San Mateo County and San Mateo County Superior Court employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, SEIU or AFSCME represented extra-help/term position prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.

The examination process will consist of an application screening (pass/fail).  Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualificationAll applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
