The Innovative Care Clinic is a primary adult care clinic which is currently working on becoming Patient Centered Medical Home certified. The clinic works in teams with the goal of providing whole person care.

The Express Care Clinic is an extension of the primary adult clinics providing urgent care to established adult patients with urgent/acute symptoms.  The NP for Express Care is providing an integral service of same or next day access for patients. As a Safety Net health center, a majority of the patient population is on Medi-Cal or is uninsured. The NP will not have on-call duties, nor carry a patient panel. 

The current vacancy is a Full-Time, Permanent position. The successful hire will be working at the Fair Oaks Clinic in Redwood City half of the day and the San Mateo Medical Center location for the other half of the day. The typical work schedule is 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday, and the typical workload is 16-18 patients per day.

The ideal candidate will have one or more years of recent NP experience in urgent care and/or ambulatory care setting; familiarity with electronic medical records; ability to communicate fluently in Spanish, both written and spoken is preferred but not required; and experience serving the safety net population. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and adaptability skills, as the County is moving toward Patient-Centered medical care, and some tasks and workflow may change during this transformation. Lastly, the ideal candidate will also have the ability to provide transportation in order to travel between work sites during work hours.
 Examples Of Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Assess urgent/acute related symptoms and utilize skill set to make informed diagnosis.
  • Identify and manage in collaboration with a physician, common illnesses and/or other health problems and refer these problems or illnesses that require immediate medical attention to the appropriate practicing physician; assume on-going responsibility for follow-ups.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other health professionals regarding health problems and illnesses following established protocol relative to diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Coordinate and facilitate referrals to other health or social agencies.
  • Maintain accurate records of assessments, follow-ups and evaluations.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 Qualifications:

Knowledge of:
  • Principles, practices and procedures used in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of common health problems as related to the clinical specialty.
  • Fundamentals of clinical medicine as related to clinical specialty.
  • Drugs commonly used in the area of specialty including the indications of their use, anticipated therapeutic effect, side effects and untoward reactions and contraindications.
  • Safety and infection control practices and procedures.
  • Normal and abnormal values of laboratory tests and their clinical significance.
  • Operations and care of medical equipment and instruments used in the area of specialty.
  • Laws and regulations pertinent to the practice of nursing and medicine applicable to assigned specialty.
  • Community resources and referral systems.
  • Provisions of the Nurse Practice Act.
Skill/Ability to:
  • Assess the health status of patients.
  • Provide health care services including the taking of a complete medical history, doing complete physical examination and other related clinical procedures.
  • Identify and manage health problems common in the area of specialty.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans for patients according to policies and protocol.
  • Analyze and interpret health information/data including results of laboratory testing.
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, professional staff and others.
  • Follow safety practices and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records and preparing reports.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

Licensure/Certification:
  • Possession of a California license as a Registered Nurse.
Special Training: The Nurse Practitioner Trainee requires enrollment in an accredited Nurse Practitioner training program leading to certification in one of the following options. The Nurse Practitioner requires certification in one of the options.

Option l - Pediatric: Primary health care for patients 17 years of age and under.
Option 2 - Family: Primary health care for patients of all ages.
Option 3 - Geriatric: Primary health care for older patients.
Option 4 - OB/GYN: Primary health care for obstetric and gynecologic patients.
 Application/Examination:
Open and Promotional. Anyone may apply. Current San Mateo County and San Mateo County Superior Court employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, SEIU or AFSCME represented extra-help/term position prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination. This is a continuous recruitment which may close at any time. The final filing date will be posted five days in advance on this job announcement.

The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: pass/fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%), which may include an additional exam component given prior to or during the interview.

Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations, or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California, and applicants must participate at their own expense.
