The County of San Mateo's Public Works Department is seeking highly motivated candidates with superb organizational skills and great technical and interpersonal skills for the position of Safety and Training Officer.

- Three years of work related experience, preferably in the area of safety training or the administration of a safety training program.
- Highly desirable: Certification as a Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STSC), or an Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST) issued by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

What You'll Do:
- Provide or facilitate safety instruction and training to the Public Works Department on mandated protocols and technical life safety issue; including equipment guarding, equipment lock out/tag out, forklift operation, bloodborne pathogens, hazardous materials, chemical hazards, confined space awareness, ergonomics, injury prevention, proper use of tools and equipment, site safety, first aid, and CPR.
- Develop, coordinate, oversee, and participate in the day-to-day operations of the Department to ensure compliance with safety and occupational health programs designed to reduce risk, safeguard our employees, prevent injury and occupational illness, and reduce damage to property.
- Assist managers and supervisors in the design of tailgate and safety training sessions, and develop checklists, hazard reporting forms and other methods to ensure implementation of safety and reporting programs.
- Conduct safety audits, facility and field inspections, and provide training and guidance to the Department.
- Administer, update, maintain and document Federal, State and local mandated occupational safety and environmental compliance programs, including the Occupational Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Cal-OSHA injury prevention and reporting, hazard communication, safe use of germicides and pesticides, and defensive driving, assuring all aspects of the programs are in compliance with applicable regulations.
- Develop and maintain emergency response plans and serve on the County's safety and emergency response committees.
- Monitor proposed safety legislation, regulations, and rules and advise on potential impacts. Keep abreast of all applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations and coordinate best practices with other safety professionals.
- Work with managers and supervisors to maintain an inventory of hazardous materials. Ensure all materials are appropriately classified and labeled per OSHA guidelines.
- Maintain departmental emergency preparedness and emergency response plans and update as needed.
- Assist in preparation and implementation of the safety program budget. Identify and request additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies, and administer the approved budget.
- Maintain mandated records related to employee health and safety programs, accidents, medical and training records, and required permits.
- Investigate workplace injuries and accidents, and recommend strategies for related safety improvements.

The examination process will consist of the steps detailed below. Because of this examination process, not all applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are guaranteed advancement through the examination process.
Initial review of application materials. At this step applicants submitting incomplete applications, lacking relevant qualifications, and/or not following instructions will be disqualified.
Application Screening. The application and supplemental responses for applicants who pass the initial review will be evaluated by a panel of subject matter experts. Applicants who pass this screening will be invited to a panel interview.
Panel Interview. At this step, applicants will be invited to a Civil Service interview, which may include the evaluation of a written and/or performance exercise given immediately preceding the interview. All interviews will be given in San Mateo County, California, and applicants must participate at their own expense.
