Surveying Technician II (Open & Promotional)

This is the journey level class of Surveying Technician. The Surveying Technician II is distinguished from the Surveying Technician I in that the former performs assignments of larger scope and works more independently. Incumbents may be assigned to perform basic office surveying functions including intake, review and checking of survey map submittals and legal descriptions, drafting of survey plats and documents, and moderately difficult job duties as an instrument technician on a survey party. The Surveying Technician II will also provide assistance to the public at the service counter, through phone calls and email requests.
The ideal candidate for this position will have the following:
- Possession of an L.S.I.T. or Certified Survey Technician I (CST 1) or above preferred but not necessary.
- At least two years of experience in providing technical support to a related public works field such as surveying, drafting, construction, or related technical support field.
- Provide excellent customer service in a professional and courteous manner.
- Ability to perform well under pressure or stressful situations.
- Ability to quickly learn work policies and procedures and adapt to the work environment.
- Read and interpret drawings, engineering plans, and recorded survey maps and deeds.
- Work independently in the field and office and manage workload in an organized manner.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing and work professionally with the public and co-workers.
- Proficient in AutoCAD drafting, plats and exhibits.
General duties include:
- Provide customer service to the public and other governmental agencies in person, by phone and/or in writing, regarding County procedures and regulations, facility locations, plan requirements and property ownership, which may require the interpretation of policies and procedures.
- Work on the survey team on specific County projects.
- Perform basic Task Safety Analysis prior to commencing any field project, function or separate task.
- Perform surveys, including setup of equipment to make field measurements and using appropriate survey instruments.
- Make survey measurements using electronic total stations, digital levels, GPS equipment and electronic data collectors.
- Act as a flagger to provide protection when performing survey work in high traffic areas.
- May reduce field notes and make related office computations.
- Perform a variety of computer-aided drafting tasks to update and maintain Public Works geographic information systems (GIS), survey maps, right of way maps, various drawings and plans.
- Obtain and distribute copies of maps, land descriptions and similar information.
- Review County base maps for accuracy and completeness.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation regarding projects surveyed.
- Perform survey related AutoCAD drafting under the direction of the County Surveyor.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

Licensure/Certification: Possession of a class C California driver license or equivalent.
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:Public Works Technician II: Two years of experience in providing technical support to a related public works field such as engineering, surveying, drafting, construction, resource conservation, or related technical support field.
Knowledge of: Techniques, principles and practices related to drafting, survey; applicable laws, codes and regulations; mathematics through trigonometry; recordkeeping principles and practices; safety principles, practices and equipment related to the work; standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment; techniques for dealing with the public, in person and over the telephone.
Skill/Ability to: Perform support work in the technical support area(s) to which assigned; perform independent research for collecting and summarizing information for the technical support area(s) to which assigned; use the office and field tools and equipment of the technical support area(s) to which assigned; prepare detailed written reports, correspondence and professional documents. Use initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines; interpret, apply and explain applicable codes and regulations; make accurate calculations; read and interpret a variety of plans, specifications and other technical documents; maintain accurate records of work performed; perform basic drafting and mapping work; perform basic field data collection; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; use computer for word processing, spreadsheet, GIS mapping, and AutoCAD drafting.
